Nils is a young boy who lives with his mother in northern Sweden, but when she dies he must move in with his uncle and work for him on the farm. Nils has a very hard time at first and does not get along well with his new guardian, but soon comes to love the animals and nature there. One day he finds an odd egg that hatches into a beautiful white horse which then tells him that it wants to take him away to see the world. The two of them ride off into the sky on its back, never to be seen again by others. After an adventure, Nils meets the animals again who have grown into a civilization of people, elves, nymphs and trolls. He learns that his beloved horse is the god Odin. He rides with them on adventures which sometimes involve himself being god-like himself. Nils is portrayed as a boy with an almost childlike love for life and animals, but also as someone who learns to make friends among other characters, like Odin (his horse), Freja (a black-haired nymph), Frodis (her mother) and even the evil troll torgny. "Nils Holgersson" is part of The Brothers Grimm's fairy tale collection "Children's and Household Tales". The "Nils Holgersson" stories were originally written by Martin Merz and Wilhelm Jacob Grimm, and published in Sweden between 1845 and 1883. The stories were then translated into several different languages (English, Dutch, German and French). This particular edition was written by Elizabeth Blewett and illustrated by Anna Riwkin-Brick. It was published in 1985 by Atheneum Books of Simon & Schuster. This is one of the few books that do not have any illustrations on the cover or on the dust jacket. The dust jacket is a plain red with a white title on it. There is a treasure hunt in the back to find a treasure inside the book. The pages are all white. The tale begins with a boy named Nils Holgersson going out to work to help his uncle Jonss Holgersson at his farm in Västergötland, Sweden. He enjoys doing chores, milking cows and cutting down the apples from the trees. But when he goes out for his morning ride along with his horse Uno, who is white except for a black stripe from its left shoulder to its rump, he falls into a pit and breaks both of his legs. Nils is removed from the pit and confined to his bed. While he is confined to his bed, he overhears his uncle saying that he wants to sell Uno because Nils will never be able to ride again and will not earn him any money. So Nils gets out of bed and begins pounding his crutches so loudly against the floorboards that everyone comes running. He tells them that he can walk again and can take care of both jobs instead of one. But when he goes out the next day to care for the cows, no one is there except Uno who is harnessed in a wagon already filled with hay. cfa1e77820
